A bachelor's in business administration was the most popular undergraduate degree to pursue in 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The reason why is no mystery. Business administration students are expected to learn business strategy, finance, operations management, statistics and accounting. These skills tend to be valuable in the workplace, which makes an education in business administration useful for many career-focused individuals.

However, the field of business administration is wide, containing many concentrations and degree types, from certificate programs all the way up to PhDs. Some programs are only available on-campus, but others can be taken in a more flexible online format. In all cases, it is important to understand the options available.

The information that follows is aimed to help students find an online business administration program that is right for them. This includes a ranking of the best online colleges for business administration; an interview with a business department director; a description of the various degree types for the subject; and career options for those with a degree in business administration.

Interview with an Expert
Dr. Deborah Louis

Dr. Debra Louis

Program Director at the Glenn R. Jones College of Business

Trident University International

Q: What are the qualities that make Trident University's online business administration major an outstanding program?

A: Over 80 percent of the faculty in Trident's Glenn R. Jones College of Business have a Ph.D. or terminal degree, and most also have professional experience in their fields. Students are taught directly by faculty in small class sections (25 or fewer) — not teaching assistants (TAs) or graders. Our pedagogy rests on written case analysis and applied projects rather than exams or tests. This requires the student to engage in direct learning through problem solving, critical thinking, and analysis. Students sharpen the writing and research skills highly valued by employers.

Q: What support does Trident University offer their online student body? Do you have resources that are specific to business administration students?

A: Students are supported from application through graduation in a number of ways. Admissions advisers prepare students for beginning their studies by making expectations clear, previewing the learning management system so students understand how to access courses and submit assignments, and follow the students through successful completion of their first assignments to be able to troubleshoot any problems or concerns. After this, students are assigned a dedicated student success adviser who assists in course recommendations, registration, any financial aid issues, and any non-academic course-related questions. These advisers stay with the student for the duration of their program. In addition, students who may have been out of school for several years and/or would like refreshers in accounting and marketing can take a non-credit self-study refresher course in these areas at no additional cost. Faculty leads are assigned to each subject area and are available to students to provide extra assistance when required or resolve any dispute or complaint with the course or instruction.

Degree Overview: Business Administration

There's a reason why business administration is such a popular online degree program, both at the bachelor's and master's degree level. An accredited degree in this versatile area of study provides a foundation of business and management skills that can be applied in almost any career venture. From office skills and leadership to communications and problem-solving, business administration programs touch on the fundamentals of how successful organizations run.

Online Business Administration Courses

Business administration students take a plethora of coursework in both business and the liberal arts. Among the most common course requirements for this major at the associate and bachelor's degree level include:

  • Microeconomics and/or Macroeconomics
  • Financial or Managerial Accounting
  • Business Law
  • Organizational behavior
  • Business communications

Concentrations might be offered in areas of specialization such as:

  • International business
  • Entrepreneurial studies
  • Supply Chain management

At the master's level, there is the infamous MBA (Master's of Business Administration) — the degree of choice for many of today's corporate and industry leaders. MBA programs usually delve into similar business coursework territory as the undergraduate programs, but in more depth. Typically these upper-division programs are two years in length, with the second year giving you the opportunity to explore electives and choose an area of expertise to focus on. Available topics for MBA studies could include International Business, Real Estate, Marketing Analytics and/or Private Equity, depending on your school and program.

Business administration students who seek recognition in their industries as business thought leaders or subject matter experts may choose to go even further still, and pursue a Doctor of Business Administration degree. Such a program is usually heavily focused on research, drilling deep into statistics and case studies, and culminating with a dissertation requirement. It is a strenuous undertaking, but can result in dizzying opportunities for those who manage to complete it.

Career-Related Skills to Develop

In some ways, business administration could be considered the "jack of all trades" business program. Business administration students require preparation in all of the major business areas — from finance to accounting to marketing to management — so that they may someday work their way up the corporate ladder or start their own business. All of these fields are related, and knowledge of them all is useful in all manner of business administration careers.

Among the skills that a business administration student should polish during their studies include: applying critical thinking and problem solving to real-world business challenges; understanding and analyzing how organizations operate and succeed in today's marketplace; and adapting both people and businesses to ever-changing industry trends.

Whether graduates become entrepreneurs or managers, or take on positions in a more specialized area such as accounting, marketing or finance, the skills learned in a business administration degree program are bound to be applicable for years to come.

Methodology

Using the National Center for Education Statistics’ Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), we generated a list of colleges and universities that met the following four criteria for the specific subject being ranked:

  • Offer a degree or certificate program in that subject, either in an online or hybrid format
  • Have at least 1% of students attending some form of distance education
  • Have awarded at least one degree or certificate in that subject in 2016-17
  • Have reported data for all 11 ranking variables listed below

We ranked 1,813 colleges and universities in the United States on 11 criteria, using 2016-17 data from IPEDS:

  1. Program prominence, based on how many of the degrees and certificates awarded via distance education in 2016-2017 were in this particular subject
  2. Related subjects, based on the number of similar topics for programs in relevant CIP codes that are offered via distance education at any level
  3. Ratio of students participating fully or partially in DE to Total Enrollment
  4. Average in-state tuition for undergraduates
  5. Graduation rate
  6. Retention rate
  7. The availability of any tuition plans (Payment, Prepaid, Guaranteed, Other)
  8. Services (Academic/Career, Placement for Completers)
  9. Credit offerings (Dual, Life, AP, Military)
  10. Percent of undergraduate students awarded federal, state, local, institutional or other sources of grant aid
  11. Average amount of federal, state, local, institutional, or other sources of grant aid awarded to undergraduate students

All schools were scored on a 10-point scale for each of the points listed above. Individual data point scores were then multiplied by their respective weights, and the scores were added together, for a maximum possible score of 10 points.

NOTE: Schools' tuition amounts are based on 2016-17 undergraduate and graduate data reported to the National Center for Education Statistics. The actual cost of tuition may vary.
