Methodology

Using the National Center for Education Statistics' Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), we generated a list of colleges and universities that met the following criteria:

  • Level of institution is either "Four or more years" or "At least 2 but less than 4 years"
  • Data is reported for all 11 ranking variables listed in the Methodology section
  • At least 1 percent of students are taking at least some of the classes via distance education
  • "Number of programs offered via distance education" was an integer greater than 0

We ranked the resulting 1,813 colleges on 11 criteria, using provisional 2016-17 data from IPEDS:

  1. Number of programs offered via distance education
  2. Ratio of students participating fully or partially in DE to Total Enrollment
  3. Average in-state tuition for undergraduates
  4. Total electronic library collections, including digital books, databases, and media
  5. Graduation rate
  6. Retention rate
  7. The availability of any tuition plans (Payment, Guaranteed, Other)
  8. Services (Academic/Career, Placement for Completers)
  9. Credit offerings (Dual, Life, AP, Military)
  10. Percent of undergraduate students awarded federal, state, local, institutional or other sources of grant aid
  11. Average amount of federal, state, local, institutional, or other sources of grant aid awarded to undergraduate students

All schools were scored on a 10-point scale for each of the points listed above. Individual data point scores were then multiplied by their respective weights, and the scores were added together, for a maximum possible score of 10 points.

NOTE: Schools' tuition amounts are based on 2016-17 undergraduate and graduate data reported to the National Center for Education Statistics. The actual cost of tuition may vary.

Historical buildings, museums that tell the story of the country's past and monuments that commemorate the nation's development are at the heart of the beauty and intrigue of Washington D.C. Of course, the nation's capital thrives as the governmental seat of the U.S. as well, and is home to think tanks, policy-making bodies and federal institutions alike. It is also home to many people who love the city for its mishmash of streets, the grassy Mall and the avant garde culture that arises there.

The city offers many choices for higher education, including at colleges and universities that have unique histories themselves. Many of these were founded for specific reasons, such as to support the deaf and hard-of-hearing or the African American population in the area. Others are well-known for specific programs, like in law or research. In fact, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)'s College Navigator reports the city is home to 24 universities and other institutions of higher education. This includes:

  • Two public, four-year universities
  • Eight private for-profit institutions
  • 14 private non-profit schools

Since there are so many learners with diverse needs there, the city has gravitated towards online options. Thanks to online opportunities, students living all across the United States can pursue a degree program at one of the capitol's prestigious schools.

A letter from Pope Leo XIII in 1887 led to the start of the Catholic University of America, a private school that offers education to both national and international students. Even though the university is located 10 miles away from Capitol Hill and the National Institutes of Health, students can still have a "capital" learning experience at this institution.

Fully online degree programs are available at CUA in nursing, social work and theology, while hybrid programs can be taken in theology and canon law. On-campus students may also be able to enroll for online courses during a break in the summer. Technology services are available to students whether they are located close or far away, and can help with the Blackboard learning management system, e-mail set-up, remote access from a virtual network and/or the use of Microsoft Office tools.

The American University, a Methodist-affiliated school, has a unique backstory that may intrigue both prospective on-campus and online learners. It was chartered by Congress in 1893 in response to a request by George Washington to have a school of higher learning in the nation's capital.

The university makes a point of noting that they do NOT offer online undergraduate programs (although they do offer online undergraduate courses and an online undergraduate certificate program). However, distance learners can find online master's degree programs in various disciplines, such as health care management, nutrition education and sports analytics and management.
