Introduction

Students can find online learning options at many of Utah's postsecondary institutions. In addition to state schools, many national online colleges also offer full degree programs to students in Utah. Typically, these schools boast a larger variety of online degrees than traditional institutions. Some even have campuses in the state, which may feature blended (part online, part face-to-face) learning options.

There are more than 1.2 million employed people in Utah, and they earn an mean annual income of $42,740, or about $20.55 an hour. Among those 25 and older, bachelor degree holders earn about $44,000 a year, while graduate or professional degree holders earn more than $64,000 a year in Utah, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Among those who are 18 to 24 years old, 52 percent have had some college or have earned an associate degree. Among those who are older than 25, just over 20 percent have a bachelor's degree and around 10 percent have earned a graduate or professional degree.

Most Affordable Colleges in Utah

The following list ranks schools in Utah that offer online degrees at the lowest tuition costs. This ranking is based on a number of factors that are important to prospective students such as the actual degree programs that are taught online, and information on tuition fees, accreditation and notable alumni. Tuition figures are sourced from the National Center for Education Statistics (2013-2014) and reflect in-state tuition (when in-state tuition is available) for all students, including online students. See our Methodology section for more details on the ranking methodology.

Brian Stecklein, Weber State University Associate Dean of Continuing Education

Q. Can you tell us a little about the online programs offered at Weber State University?

WSU Online, Weber State University's virtual campus, offers classes that conform to the academic calendar but can be attended anytime and anywhere via the internet. Multiple degree and certificate programs are offered as online programs, along with a wide variety of general education courses. Areas included at WSU are Bachelor of Integrated Studies, Computer Science, General Studies, Health Information Management, Health Services Administration, Medical Laboratory Science, and Radiologic Sciences. Each program area may have multiple degree or certificate offerings.

Q. What advice would you give to students interested in an online degree program?

Students who wish to take courses at Weber State University need to understand they need to be self-motivated. Students should set aside time each week to work on their courses just like they were coming to a class on campus. This can certainly be at a time and place that works for them, but it should be consistent without interruptions. For face-to-face courses the rule of thumb is for every 50-minute class period, you should plan on two hours of homework. Start with this in mind, making sure you set enough time aside to get through your assignments. You may always adjust as you determine the time needs of the course. Don't be afraid to ask questions of the faculty or students. Engage them just like you would in the classroom. This is your learning opportunity, and you should get what you need out of the course.

Q. How do you anticipate online learning might evolve in the coming years?

Online learning helped make education more available to students. This trend will continue as more students try to juggle their personal life choices. Education is one of the great levelers of society. It helps people grow intellectually, financially and can help them become whoever they would like to be. Online learning will continue to help educate society and fulfill the dreams of many people who may not have had the chance before.
