Online Colleges Offering Degrees in Adult Education

A career in adult education provides an opportunity for individuals to work with adults in a variety of environments. Many adults are looking to improve upon their professional skills, hobbies or basic academic knowledge. A young adult may wish to pursue his or her GED while maintaining a full-time job, or a stay-at-home parent may want to learn how to play the guitar. Careers in adult education can help make these dreams a possibility for many, and it can be an extremely gratifying career choice.

What to Expect from Online Degrees in Adult Education

Some adult education positions don't have formal education requirements, but others require at least a bachelor's degree along with a teaching license. For jobs that don't call for a college credential, those with a degree may have an edge during the hiring process.

Degrees in adult education can be earned online, and students can expect to learn many types of skills while enrolled in their program. Working adults may have the flexibility of earning an online degree in adult education while still committing to a full-time work schedule. And commuting to school is not necessary for those enrolled in fully online programs, which can save both time and money. See online colleges for education to see more degree options.

Job Outlook for Graduates With Online Degrees in Adult Education

Two career options for graduates of online degrees in adult education are adult literacy and GED instructors, as well as self-enrichment teachers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), adult literacy and GED instructors generally need a bachelor's degree and teaching license. The national mean annual salary for these and other instructors was $52,830 as of May 2014, according to the BLS. In addition, the profession is expected to see nine percent job growth nationally from 2012 to 2022, leading to a potential opening of 6,700 new positions, the BLS reports.

An influx of immigration to the U.S. has helped spur demand for adult education careers. Careers in adult literacy and GED teachers are important because there are many adults and youth who need to acquire basic reading, writing, and English-speaking skills. Many also need to earn their GED, which would be difficult without the assistance of these instructors, according to the BLS.

Self-enrichment teachers do not require any formalized educational training, but experience in the subject they wish to teach is generally needed. As of May 2014, the BLS reports that the mean annual wage for self-enrichment teachers was $41,200.
