According to the BLS, most electricians earn these credentials through a combination of on-the-job apprenticeships and formal classroom instruction and lab work. These types of programs typically result in certificates or associate degrees. A variety of online electrician programs are also availalble and these usually lead to similar undergraduate training. Many that are available online are diploma based that provide information about current, electricity, electrical installation, wiring and more.

Electricians enjoy a great deal of flexibility and job security. According to the BLS, 72 percent of electricians were either self-employed or worked within construction in 2010, and round-the-clock electrician firms offered flexible shift-work. While the BLS projects that demand for electricians will increase by 12 percent between 2008 and 2018, those working within maintenance tend to fare better than those battling a sluggish construction industry. The BLS also reports that in 2010, electricians earned mean annual wages of $51,810, which may seem impressive relative to educational attainment. Electrician degrees and training programs can help boost earning potential overall, especially among those willing to continually re-invest in their training.
