Notable Industries in Houston
As a big city in one of the biggest states in the country, Houston can offer people the chance to work in a number of industries. As of March 2013, the city sported a 6 percent unemployment rate, which was lower than the national average of 7.6 percent (bizjournals.com/houston, 2013). According to the city's official website, the Houston metropolitan area alone has the 30th largest economy in the world (houstontx.gov, 2013). While almost half of the jobs in the area are in business, technology, aerospace, and others, there is also a thriving energy sector. Some notable industries in the city include:
- Business - Houston is home to the headquarters of 23 Fortune 500 companies, including ConocoPhillips, Enterprise Products Partners, Sysco and Halliburton. Sixty-two foreign companies also have business ties to the city (houstontx.gov, 2013). With this diversity of options, earning a degree in fields like business administration, accounting, finance or human resources may help individuals qualify for openings within these companies.
- Sports - The city is home to many professional teams, including the Rockets (NBA), the Texans (NFL), the Astros (MLB), and the Dynamo (MLS). Last year, the Rockets produced $175 million dollars of revenue, making it the seventh highest valued NBA team according to Forbes magazine (forbes.com. 2013). There are also a number of minor league affiliates for the major sports, and these teams may need qualified public relations specialists. Players for these teams may want to hire an agent to help manage their career and negotiate contracts.
- Art - Houston has a dedicated museum district, with 19 museums located within 1.5 miles of the Mecom Fountain in Hermann Park. It's also one of the largest museum campuses in the nation according to Houston's official website. The district holds attractions such as the John C. Freeman Weather Museum, the Health Museum, the Center for Photography and the Museum of African American Culture. The Houston Zoo is also located in the museum district (houstonmuseumdistrict.org, 2013). Individuals who have earned a degree in art history, photography or history may be able to find work as curators, museum technicians, or archivists.
