Online Colleges for Anthropology

As the study of humanity, online anthropology degrees offer a fascinating look at the complex factors that impact our communities. Although often considered a career that focuses on the past, anthropology is a dynamic field that examines how human biology, psychology and cultural settings continue to impact how people interact with one another. According to the American Anthropological Association, anthropology degrees can provide students with critical thinking skills and global knowledge that make them valuable to employers in the business, education and public services sectors. Those interested in online anthropology programs may also find that degrees in psychology, human services and diversity studies provide a compelling look into human behavior.

Anthropology Online Programs

Online anthropology degrees and related programs can be found at almost every level. Associate degrees in general studies can offer a solid base of education upon which to begin work on a bachelor's degree in anthropology. An associate degree in human services can also lead to work as a social or human services assistant. Undergraduate programs can be found in anthropology or focus on human services, psychology, interdisciplinary studies or gender diversity studies. These specializations can continue to the master and doctoral levels as well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a bachelor's degree may be sufficient for some anthropological and human services positions, but employers may prefer job candidates with advanced degrees. In some cases, a doctoral degree may be required as well.

With the right education, graduates from online anthropology programs can select from a number of career options. The BLS estimates the need for anthropologists will grow by 28 percent from 2008-2018, and these professionals earned mean annual wages of $58,040 in 2010. Those interested in working in a related field may consider jobs for social and human services assistants or psychologists. Human services assistants, who can often be ready to work with only an associate degree, earned mean annual wages of $30,100 in 2010 while demand for these assistants was estimated to increase 23 percent from 2008-2018. Meanwhile, industrial-organizational psychologists earned mean annual wages of $114,040 in 2010 with growth in the overall psychology field predicted at 12 percent from 2008-2018. Graduates from online anthropology programs may also be interested in pursuing related career paths and jobs such those for counselors, social workers, social science teachers and sociologists. With the skills learned from online anthropology degrees, graduates may find their career options go far beyond the stereotype of scientists studying ancient history.
