Online Colleges for Aviation Science

As the world's population continues to expand and business becomes increasingly more global, demand for those with aviation science degrees is expected to grow steadily. One way to obtain the education you need is to look for training programs that are available online. While you may find the kind of opportunities you are looking for there, you may also want to look at flight schools and even the military or vocational schools as other ways to obtain your education.

Aviation Science Online Programs

While the vast majority of pilots receive their training in the military or through a flying school, not all simultaneously are working toward an academic degree. There are programs available online that can help pilots who already have a commercial license to complete a four-year degree. Such is the case of the bachelor's of science degree in aeronautics. This could lead to a much more thorough understanding of aeronautics than taught in flight school, and might create greater job-option horizons for pilots. Some specializations that aviation science programs offer include aerial photography, aerial firefighting, and spacecraft design. Other online programs can train you to enter the field of aircraft mechanics and help you learn more about avionics fundamentals as well as A&P airframe and powerplant. You'll also find a vast number of aviation programs available through vocational and flying schools. These types of schools, obviously ground-based, can help you to quickly gain the types of skills and work hours that you need to enter the field and to advance.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that commercial pilot jobs should increase by 12 percent from 2008 to 2018 and avionics technician jobs should increase by 11 percent from 2008 to 2018. Aircraft mechanics and service technicians could see job opportunities expand 6 percent during the same time period. Mean earned wages for pilots were $73,490; for avionics technicians, $52,050; and for aircraft mechanics and service technicians, $52,280. Many pilots could could find that employment opportunities are related to changes in the economy and that furloughs could be possible during economic downturns, according to the BLS. However, job opportunities for those working as aircraft mechanics and service technicians are predicted to be better than in the past with some of the best opportunities available for those willing to work in rural locations, according to the BLS.
