Managers can be invaluable to companies in a variety of fields. These professionals organize and motivate departments and groups to achieve productivity and profitability goals. Some are generalists whereas others specialize in such areas as marketing, operations management, finance, health care, information technology or human resources. An online bachelor's degree in management can help you prepare for a leadership or management role at a company, agency, or other organization.

Online Bachelor Programs for Business Management

Bachelor's in management programs vary between online business colleges, but typically require about four years for full-time students to complete. Some allow you to concentrate on one area of business like health care management, finance, organizational development or humanities management. In general, students must complete required general education courses in subjects like communications, humanities, math/natural sciences, social sciences and English composition. A bevy of business management related courses are also part of the curriculum -- principles of management, operations management, negotiation and conflict management, finance, accounting, statistics, marketing and risk management, for example.

Online degree programs can allow you to study and learn on your time, at your own pace, and from any location. In addition, online colleges can provide ample ways for students to engage and keep in contact with their instructors, and Internet technology can make communication easy and often immediate. The experience you gain from using this technology in your online classes may come in handy once you're on the job in a management or leadership position.

Job Opportunities for Students with Online Bachelor's Degree in Management

Holding a bachelor's degree in management is typically a requirement for many management positions, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov, 2012). While these positions may vary wildly from the information technology industry to the medical, most management positions utilize the same leadership and administration training provided during business school and as such, work experience in specific fields may be needed in addition to a degree in management.

While there may be various types of management positions available to business school graduates, the two following professions may provide insight into the many possible career options that are available:

  • Human Resources Managers Jobs: Human resource managers are responsible for the recruiting, interviewing and hiring of employees as well as contributing to companywide strategic planning and can act as a liaison between company management and employees. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in this field is expected to grow by up to 13 percent nationally from 2010 to 2020, as fast as the average for all occupations (bls.gov, 2012). As of May 2012, human resource managers made a national median annual wage of $99,720 with the highest and lowest 10 percent earning $173,140 and $59,020 respectively (bls.gov, 2013)
  • Financial Managers Jobs: These professionals manage an organization's finances, direct investments, and develop long-term monetary goals for their company, investors or clients. They may also be responsible for producing financial reports and overseeing analysts and accountants. Employment in this field is expected to grow by up to nine percent from 2010 to 2020, slower than average for all occupations (bls.gov, 2012). As of May 2012, financial managers earned an median annual wage of $109,740 with the highest and lowest 10 percent earning more than $187,199 and $59,630 respectively.

If you hold a bachelor's degree in management, you may also continue your education and pursue a master's in management, business administration or similar discipline. To find out more about online colleges offering bachelor's degrees in management, please view one of the schools below.
