Online Colleges Offering Bachelor's Degrees in International Business and Global Management

As companies look to grow and operate internationally, they will need professionals who are trained in the aspects of international business. Global expansion is a difficult process and one that has to be thoroughly planned out if a company hopes to succeed. For example, marketing products and services to different cultures can be fundamentally different from marketing the same products in the United States. In addition, external factors such as fluctuating foreign currencies can impact a company’s bottom line if they are not accounted for properly. A bachelor’s degree in international business from an online college helps to prepare students to address these types of real world business issues.

What does a Bachelor's Degree in International Business from an Online College Entail?

Online business colleges offer several bachelor degree options for students interested in studying international business. Some schools offer bachelor’s degrees in business administration (either as a bachelor’s of science or a bachelor’s of arts) with a concentration or specialization in international business, while others offer bachelor’s degrees in international business and/or global management. Independent of the specific degree program chosen, students who study international business learn about international management and business operations, international economics and finance, international business law, international marketing, benefits and challenges of outsourcing, and the impacts of globalization on corporations. In addition to concentration-specific courses, students also learn about accounting, management, operations, economics, finance, ethics, and business law.

Online colleges provide a unique opportunity for students to gain real world experience using technology that will be needed in their careers. For example, online college courses employ web conferencing, teleconferencing, instant messaging and other forms of technology for student-student and student-teacher interactions. In addition, online students get the opportunity to interact with classmates across the U.S. and potentially the world, giving them experience communicating with people of different cultures and demographics. Both of these aspects of online college are vital for careers in international business.

Related Careers for Graduates of Online Bachelor's Degree Programs in International Business

There are many different career paths that graduates can take after completing an international business program. Typical entry-level jobs for students who complete a bachelor’s degree in global management include: business analyst, management analyst, operations manager, international sales manager, international logistics coordinator, import/export representative, and foreign or international affairs manager. For students who are interested in working outside the U.S. after graduating, it is best to target a multinational company that has offices worldwide. Doing so may increase the likelihood of relocation.

While the Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov, 2012) does not have employment data specifically for a career in international business, it does provide statistics for related careers that one might obtain after completing his or her degree. These include management analyst, logistician, and financial analyst. According to bls.gov, between 2010 and 2020, these occupations are expected to grow 22 percent, 26 percent, and 23 percent, respectively. All three careers are expected to grow faster than the national average for all careers surveyed. In addition, bls.gov notes that the demand for management analysts will increase due to growth in international business opportunities as more U.S. companies look to expand globally.

An online bachelor’s degree program in international business helps students acquire many of the characteristics that are considered important for these careers. These characteristics include strong analytical, communication, interpersonal, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
