City of Indianapolis

Indianapolis is a city that companies are investing in, and the city is investing in them right back. Numerous tax credits exist for corporations and venture capitalists who pour money into building the technological economy. There are also many different ways businesses can deliver goods to and from the city, as it has a FedEx hub, ports, major highways, and many trucking companies that travel all over the country.

With these opportunities, individuals may wish to earn a postsecondary degree in order to qualify for growing industries in the area. Not everyone, however, will be able to attend on-campus courses in order to do this. Online college programs in Indianapolis can help nontraditional students who have less time to travel to a brick-and-mortar institution. People who already have jobs may not have a flexible enough schedule to attend morning courses. Parents in the 196,976 family households counted in the 2010 U.S. census (census.gov) may not always be able to hire a babysitter in order to head to a campus for classes. Online universities in Indianapolis can provide these potential students the chance to work toward their goal on their own schedule.

Game Changing Online College Programs in Indianapolis in 2013

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis - New MOOCs Being Explored For College Credit

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is exploring options on how completion of non-credit massive open online courses (MOOCs) can be transferred to for-credit courses at the university, making it the first university with online college programs in Indianapolis to do so. In partnership with cloud-based learning tools company CourseNetworking, IUPUI created its first two MOOCs in 2013. "Gaza 2050 - A Visioning Exercise" was offered by IUPUI for credit to students at Gaza University as well as to the public at large as a free MOOC. The nine-session course was instructed by nine separate professors from universities across Indiana and the world. The course encouraged students first to envision an ideal future for the Gaza Strip. They then discussed solutions to reach this ideal future. Solutions discussed included how steps could be taken to create new social characteristics, infrastructure improvements, and legal changes.

IUPUI also offered the "Music for the Listener" MOOC through the Purdue University School of Engineering and Technology's Department of Music and Arts Technology. The free six-week MOOC was developed by professor Darrell Bailey and was meant to reach students from all over the world. The course even included full translation features. Students learned about western classical music from 600 A.D. to the present day. Popular music, music from the movies, world music and jazz were also covered. The course featured six online video lectures, regular reading assignments, and guided listening posts of video performances. Students were expected to spend three-four hours on the course each week.

University of Indianapolis - New Certificate in Healthy Aging

UIndy is one of several universities with online classes in Indianapolis offering certificate programs for working adults. However, not many universities can boast that they offer such a unique online certificate as UIndy's "Certificate in Healthy Aging." Students who register for the online program will learn about specific aspects of aging so that they have a solid foundation to draw from in their care and treatment of aging adults. The six-week course will explain how nutrition affects aging and how scientific research is helping us to understand this relationship more thoroughly. Students will also learn what it means to have an aging brain that is healthy, and how they can help aging adults continue to function at a high cognitive level later in life.

Furthermore, the course examines the role that physical activity plays in healthy aging. Finally, the course covers what part intimacy and sexuality can play in the overall health of seniors, making this one of the most unique online college programs in Indianapolis. The certificate is geared toward working adults in the health care field, those who work with seniors, and students entering the field of gerontology. The certificate program has been accredited and approved by numerous nursing and health care organizations. Enrollment in the course costs $65.

Careers Options for Graduates in Indianapolis

In 2012, the state of Indiana was voted 18th best in the nation for business by Forbes (forbes.com), and Indianapolis is a microcosm of that pro-business spirit. According to Develop Indy, the Indianapolis area's local economic development organization, the city benefits from low corporate tax rates, a strong transportation infrastructure (including a new $1 billion international airport terminal), and a number of institutions of higher learning such as Purdue University, the University of Notre Dame and Butler University (developindy.com, 2010). This may help the city grow local, national and international business interests and provide college graduates with an opportunity to enter a variety of different careers in industries such as:

Sports Industry Careers

Indianapolis hosts many sporting events throughout the year and also has many professional teams that call the city home: the Colts (NFL), Pacers (NBA), and the Fever (WNBA). Racing also has a large presence, with the Indy 500, Brickyard 400, Mac Tools US Nationals and the Red Bull Moto GP. The city also serves as the headquarters of the NCAA (developindy.com, 2010). For people interested in working in the field of sports, working for businesses that participate in sports sponsorships, or possibly for one of these teams, earning a degree in sports management, public relations, or marketing and advertising may give them the skills to qualify for open positions.

Business Industry Careers

Indianapolis has tried to make itself as business friendly as possible, with more than 100 trucking companies that transport goods across the U.S. and to Canada and Mexico. According to Develop Indy, the city has the second biggest FedEx hub in the world, three ports, five rail lines, and the lowest sales and use tax in the Midwest. Over 500 foreign companies, including Rolls Royce, Toyota, Roche Diagnostics, Bayer Corp and Vitran Express, have a business site in the area, and have invested heavily in the city (developindy.com, 2010). The governor of the state also lowered the corporate tax from 8.5 to 6.5 percent in 2011 (in.gov). With all these incentives, business may be a good field for people to look for careers, with possible degrees including business administration, accounting, international business or finance.

Technology Industry Careers

There are many incentives for the 21,000 companies such as Eli Lilly and Company, Allison Transmission, Cook Medical Group, and Raytheon Technical Services, who work in the technology sphere to operate in Indianapolis. Develop Indy reports that there is an R&D sales tax credit on purchases of computers, telecommunications equipment, and software. Some income that comes from federal patents on new technologies is exempt. Venture capitalists can also receive a tax credit for money they invest in IT companies (developindy.com, 2010). Tech innovation and growth is highly encouraged, so people may want to earn a degree in Web design, information systems security, information technology or network administration to qualify for one of these positions.
