While employees can be trained on the job, many medical assistants complete one- or two-year programs while dental assistants can often complete training in less than a year. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that those with training are often preferred when it comes to hiring because they need less training on the job. Online medical and dental programs can be found through Diploma-based training to become a Medical Administrative Assistant or Dental Assistant as well as through Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degrees offered in Medical Assisting. Diploma-level training is also available online in related fields such as occupational therapy, pharmacy technician assisting, health care assisting and more.

Employment in the medical and dental assisting field is expected to grow much faster than average compared with other occupations, according to the BLS. The medical assistant field is projected to grow by 34 percent between 2008 and 2018 while the dental assistant field is projected to grow by 36 percent during the same time. Both medical and dental assistants should find excellent job prospects, according to the BLS. Workers in these occupations earned mean annual wages of $29,760 and $34,140, respectively.
