Beautiful landscapes are an essential part of everything from public parks and playgrounds to shopping centers and college campuses. That being said, it isn't hard to believe that professionals in the architecture and landscape design field will be in continued need. In fact, employment for landscape architects is expected to increase by 14 percent between 2012 and 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Students can enter this field by obtaining a bachelor's or master's degree in landscape architecture. These degrees are typically called a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) or a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA) and usually take four to five years to complete. Those with an undergraduate degree in a different field can pursue a Master's of Landscape Architecture (MLA), which usually takes about three years to complete. Students with undergraduate training in the field can typically complete their advanced degree in two years. Nationwide, landscape architects earned mean annual wages of $69,530, according to May 2014 BLS data.

Architecture and Landscape Online Programs

Students looking for online architecture and landscape programs can find opportunities to take classes such as Drafting with AutoCad or diploma-based programs offering training in landscaping. While it might seem hard to believe that such programs are offered online, an online diploma-based program can give you the opportunity to learn about plant health as well as soil and fertilizers, starting your own landscaping business, and using shrubs and other ground-cover plants in your creative landscape designs. See online colleges for engineering for more education options.

Many self-employed people work in the architecture and landscape design field -- about 15 percent -- according to 2014 BLS information. A likely factor that is driving job growth in the field is the interest in and need for sustainably designed projects.
