University of Southern California - Online Engineering Master's Degree Program
The University of Southern California has been offering online college programs in Los Angeles for many years, with its Viterbi School of Engineering leading the way. The department has been a pioneer in distance learning technology for about 40 years after it first began sending courses to engineers across southern California via microwave technology. Now, USC has made a mult-million dollar investment into the technology used to deliver the Viterbi School's online engineering graduate degree programs to distance learning students. The latest in computers, high-definition cameras, video conferencing, and sound technologies will deliver the nation's top online engineering degree programs to students across the world. Also included in the investment are server and streaming upgrades.
Students and faculty should experience improved interaction due to the upgrades. With the new technology, students will be able to talk directly with both the faculty and other students during real-time lectures. Furthermore, small group collaboration will be able to take place using dedicated cameras and tablet devices. Participating students will be able to use their mobile devices to stream high-quality audio and video lectures as well. Upgrading the technology will also allow the university to expand the extremely popular program. USC is adding two more physical classroom studios to the Distance Education Network at Viterbi (DEN@Viterbi), which will allow the school to offer an additional 30 classes a year. That translates into an additional 600 available slots for online students. Currently, the DEN@Viterbi offers more than 40 online master's degree, graduate certificate, and non-credit professional programs.
University of California, Los Angeles - New Online Summer Courses
In the summer of 2013, UCLA joined other universities with online classes in Los Angeles by offering several new online classes during its summer session. In total, UCLA offered 24 summer courses online. Topics ranged from film and theatre to genetic engineering. Of these, six were new online course offerings. The "Introduction to Fiction: The Novels of Jane Austen" course was taught by UCLA Distinguished Professor of English Anne K. Mellor. Students studied four of Austen's major novels: Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. The techniques of prose fiction were analyzed during the course.
Other new courses included Professor Robert Goldberg's "Genetic Engineering in Medicine, Agriculture, and Law." The five-unit course provided UCLA's online students with general education credit requirements and a lab credit. Students studied the social, ethical, and legal issues created by new technologies in genetic engineering. Focusing on the contemporary applications of genetic engineering in medicine, agriculture and law, video lectures and custom animations were used to assist students with learning the material. UCLA continues to offer several online college programs in Los Angeles throughout the year.
